Peace Building Begins with You!
AUA’s 2012 Building Peace by Building Homes trip to Jordan
In May 2012, AUA led a delegation of peace-building volunteers to build homes with Jordanian families in the historic town of Salt. The project was an exciting step in building a movement of Americans who are actively committed to making a positive difference in the relationship between Americans and citizens of the Muslim World.
The 2012 Building Peace by Building Homes initiative united Americans with citizens in Muslim-majority countries through volunteer service, community discussions, and cultural-learning experiences. Unofficial Ambassadors worked side-by-side with Jordanian families to build homes for them while immersing themselves in the rich culture and heritage of Jordan.
“I was really touched by their appreciation and I can only hope that they remember us. It was amazing how our objective to engage in the physical labor of building a home and to foster people-to-people partnerships at the community levelresulted in an overwhelmingly warm and happy feeling for all of us in just four days.” – Luis.
“The trip exceeded my expectations. Anything I knew about Muslims or Arabs was from the media or from people around me and it was so way off! I thought they would treat me ‘badly’- but they appreciated that I was different – there was so much love, we did not know what to do with it!” – Marcela.
